Seeking a Safe Haven: Celebrity Guide to Asylum

Did you know some favorite celebrities were once refugees? Their stories help explain that asylum is GRANTED even to those who were never harmed in their home countries.

What is Asylum?

Asylum is a way to ask the U.S. government for protection if you are afraid to go back to your home country. Citizens from anywhere can apply, but what each applicant says will depend on their home country’s condition. You should ask for asylum if in your home country (1) persons like you are being hurt, (2) you were hurt, OR (3) it’s probable that you will be hurt if you return. The harm must be because of your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or because you are part of a certain group. It is possible to win asylum even with this administration, and those who do can stay here, work, and later apply for citizenship.

Although asylum is easier to win for those who apply within one year of their last arrival to the United States, there are exceptions to this deadline.

The Dalai Lama Crossed the Border Illegally

The U.S. government does NOT review asylum applications for persons who are outside the country. Foreigners cross borders (1) to save their lives, and (2) to request asylum. The Dalai Lama crossed the McMahon line, which marked the border between India and China, on March 31, 1959. He was granted asylum by his new host country only AFTER entering.

Einstein Was Never Touched by a Nazi

A person can win asylum even if they were NEVER harmed AT ALL. What matters is that there is a pattern or practice of harm to . similarly situated persons. Albert Einstein entered the United States before Adolf Hitler even became chancellor of Germany. Mr. Einstein was given asylum because Jews in his homeland of Germany were being tortured and killed on account of their religion, political opinion, and membership in a particular social group.

Asylum For Family of Political Opponents

Like Einstein, singer-entrepreneur Gloria Estefan and first female Secretary of State Madeline Albright also were granted asylum without ever being harmed. They were children of political opponents.

Children can receive asylum as dependents or applying on their own. Siblings and parents of political dissidents can also receive asylum if they fear significant harm BECAUSE of the family relationship.
