Neighborhood Checks for Naturalization
Because the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Republican Party are aggressively targeting legal permanent resident green card holders for deportation, many foreigners are applying for U.S. citizenship through naturalization. This administration has responded several ways to block the foreign-born from becoming citizens.
CBS News discovered in August 2025 that DHS officials will now interview neighbors and coworkers of some noncitizens before approving a naturalization application.
A Way to Illegally Deny the Vote
The discovered memo mentions the illegal requirements that DHS is putting on green card holders. The investigations will be looking for info showing that the applicant is not “well-disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States.” Making the United States “happy” is logically impossible. Until now, DHS has relied on background and criminal check to determine if green card holders have the needed good moral character. Simply stated, this is a loophole to keep certain applicants from becoming U.S. citizens.
Other Ways that Naturalization is Being Blocked
Becoming a U.S. citizen is no longer a matter of paying taxes, not breaking laws, and living in the country. The new and worsened DHS is demanding what it calls a “holistic” standard for naturalization. Unlike the president himself – who is a convicted felon and longtime associate of known pedophiles – applicants for citizenship must prove “adherence to societal norms” to get approved.
