How Will 2024 Presidential Election Change Immigration?

After the November presidential election, the lives of millions of immigrants in the United States might change severely. Or not. We don’t have to guess as to what the next presidency will bring. By studying the past actions of Trump and Biden, we know what the future will hold depending on who wins.

What if Trump Wins Election

Trump claims he will use the military and state police to arrest millions of undocumented persons in the United States, even those without any criminal history. This could happen. While Trump was president between 2016 and 2020, he demonstrated that he was okay with spending millions of dollars on programs (even if judges later overturned them).

U.S. taxpayers paid for lawyers to defend his travel ban based on religion (Muslim); separation of children from their parents; the policy requiring asylees to remain in Mexico; and attempts to get rid of work permits for immigrants who were brought as children (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Ironically, although Trump’s White House spent millions hiring immigration police, data shows immigrants were more likely to be released after an arrest under Trump than under Biden.

Based on his past actions and his policies for the future, it is reasonable to assume that the size of the government including law enforcement staff size will increase significantly if Trump wins the election.

What if Harris Wins Election

If Harris wins the election, the current immigrant policies are likely to remain in place. Immigration court backlogs are being reduced. The US Citizenship and Immigration Service will continue to save money (online filing started during the Biden presidency). And border crossings will continue to decrease (migrant crossings went down 40% starting in June 2024).
